FMFRP 12-12, The History of the Medical Department of the United States Navy in World War II, Volume I. This document, published by the United States Marine Corps in 1953, provides a comprehensive narrative and pictorial history of the medical care provided to the naval service during World War II. It is a reprint of a historical work originally published commercially and is now part of the Fleet Marine Force Reference Publication series. The document was reviewed and approved by Major General M. P. Sullivan, Deputy Commander for Warfighting, Marine Corps Combat Development Command, and was distributed to President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, among others. The foreword to this publication highlights the remarkable achievements of military medicine in World War II. The recovery rate for wounded men was significantly higher than in World War I, with 98 out of every 100 wounded men recovering, compared to 90 in World War I. The high standard of professional skill and training of medical personnel, as well as the provision of vast quantities of medical supplies and equipment, contributed to this success. The Medical Department of the Navy expanded rapidly during the war, from less than 13,000 personnel at the beginning to over 169,000 by 1945. To support this expansion, new hospitals were built, and existing facilities were converted or acquired. Mobile hospitals, hospital transports, and hospital ships played critical roles in providing medical care to naval personnel in various campaigns. The prevention of disease was also a major focus, with personnel being vaccinated against diseases such as smallpox, typhoid fever, and yellow fever. Dental officers and personnel played a significant part in the war, providing first aid and dental care to wounded personnel. The development of prosthetic dentistry and the use of mobile dental units were also important contributions. The document highlights the importance of specialties such as aviation medicine, submarine medicine, and amphibious medicine. The Hospital Corps of the Navy and the Navy Nurse Corps also played crucial roles in the war, with their bravery and dedication to duty saving countless lives. The Naval Medical Research Institute at Bethesda, Maryland, was established during the war and became a center for research in naval military medicine. Workers in various scientific fields contributed to the prevention of disease, relief of suffering, and saving of lives. This document is a testament to the remarkable achievements of the Medical Department of the United States Navy during World War II.
