What did the declassified documents reveal?

COLD OPEN. This is a declassified memorandum from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, dated February twenty‑third, nineteen‑seventy‑one, titled “Liberation Army Revolutionary Group Organization,” commonly abbreviated LARGO. The file is notable because it details the FBI’s internal assessment of radical youth movements in the early 1970s, including the Weather Underground and the Revolutionary Youth Movement, and it was released to the public through The Black Vault archive. PROVENANCE. The document was released under Freedom of Information Act case number six zero two three four, declassified on November eighth, two thousand six, by the Office of the Assistant Director for Counterintelligence. The original source is catalogued at the Black Vault with the URL https://archive.org/download/largo-part-3/LARGOpart3djvu.txt, and the same text is available as a PDF at that address. THE DOCUMENT. The memorandum opens with a heading in Richmond, Virginia, on February twenty‑third, nineteen‑seventy‑one, and reads: “Title: Liberation Army Revolutionary Group Organization (LARGO). Character: Internal Security – Anarchy. Reference: Richmond letterhead memorandum dated and captioned as above. All sources, except any listed below, whose identities are concealed in referenced communication have furnished reliable information in the past. This document contains neither recommendations nor conclusions of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. It is the property of the FBI and is loaned to your agency; it and its contents are not to be distributed outside your agency.” The text then provides a historical sketch of the group initially called the “Action Faction,” later known as the Weather Underground. The memorandum states that the Weather Underground controlled SDS nationally from June nineteen‑sixty‑nine until the office was closed in February nineteen‑seventy, at which point it no longer considered itself part of SDS. The term “Weatherman” is traced to an ideological paper titled “You Don’t Need a Weatherman to Know Which Way the Wind Blows,” published in New Left Notes, June eighteen, nineteen‑sixty‑nine. The paper outlined a Marxist‑Leninist stance with an emphasis on action over theory, aligning itself with the Cuban Revolution and Fidel Castro’s call for revolutionary action. The memo continues: “During October, nineteen‑sixty‑five Weather Underground riots in Chicago resulted in more than two hundred sixty arrests for mob action and related charges. A program of armed struggle was finalized during the December eight, nineteen‑sixty‑nine ‘War Council,’ wherein terrorist tactics and political assassination were contemplated. The basic strength of Weather Underground was then revealed to be some three hundred…
