Operation VENUS - Surveillance Report on Hungarian Intelligence Officer Tibor VARGA in Belgium – October 2, 1957 This document, released by The Black Vault, is a surveillance report on Hungarian intelligence officer Tibor VARGA in Belgium, dated October 2, 1957. The report is part of Operation VENUS, a covert operation aimed at monitoring VARGA's activities. The document is a translation of a French report, and it details the movements of VARGA and his chauffeur, Istvan BALOGH, on October 2, 1957. The surveillance team, led by LE 43 CI, monitored VARGA's activities from 7:00 AM to 15:50 PM, with the goal of determining who, if anyone, from the Hungarian Legation would service the dead drop established at Cointe for "Peter" of Operation VENUS. The report describes VARGA's movements in detail, including his departure from the Hungarian Legation, his visits to various locations, and his eventual return to the Legation. The surveillance team observed VARGA and BALOGH from a distance, but did not actually observe the removal or deposit of material by either of the Hungarians. The report notes that the surveillance was halted when VARGA reached the immediate neighborhood of the drop, and that the team did not actually observe the removal or deposit of material. The report concludes by stating that the objective of the surveillance was achieved, and that the team lifted the surveillance as a measure of security. This is a translation of a French report, and it provides a detailed account of VARGA's activities on October 2, 1957. The report is a valuable resource for understanding the operations of the Hungarian intelligence service during the Cold War. This is what the public record looks like at its most ordinary.
