The Albanian minority in Yugoslavia comprises a population of approximately 900,000 individuals living in the Kosovo, Montenegro, and Western Macedonia. The Kosovo is theoretically a part of the Autonomous Region belonging to the Republic of Serbia, which in turn is incorporated within the Yugoslav Federated Republics. 4. By adding Metohija to Kosovo, the Autonomous Region received the name of Kosmet. The Kosmet has approximately 750,000 inhabitants, 85 percent of whom are Albanians by origin and language. 5. At the time the borders of Albania were established by the London Conference in 1913, the Kosovo was ceded to Serbia. Numerous Kosovars and other Albanians living in the newly acquired Serbian territories sought refuge in Albania. 6. These people settled in Fusha e Krujes, Mamurras, Fush'e Mbretit (Elbasan), Myzegeja, and other localities. Others were expelled by the Serbians, including a great number of notables, among whom were the Bllaca family, and numerous dignitaries of the Catholic Church. 7. Fathers Shtjefen Kurti, Gjon Bicaku, and Mikel Shala managed to save their lives by escaping to Albania in 1929. At that time the Albanian Government sent a violent protest to the League of Nations concerning the murder of Father Shtefen Gjecov. 8. The murder is described in a book by Doctor Vasfi Samimi, published in Tirana.
