Two OFFICER REPORTED THAT three TU-four AT eight thousand FEET FLYING WEST TO EAST BOMBED TACHEN. Three OP REPORTED SIMILAR EYES at TACHEN. TACHEN ALSO REPORTS three TU ABOVE TU-two AROUND NOON. RADIO MONITORING INDICATED THAT SOME SPECIAL TYPE A-C-F-T LANDED HANGCHOW ON January tenth AND THAT TU-four ABOVE TU-two AROUND NOON. SEVERAL U.S. OBSERVERS WITNESSING BOMBING INSIST NO TU-four OVER TACHEN. ON THIS DAY RUSSIAN TRANSMISSIONS OVER TU-two RADIO January tenth AND OVER GROUND RADIO FROM HANGCHOW ON January twelfth AND eighteenth. THIS FIRST RUSSIAN LANGUAGE TRANSMISSION SINCE December first. MAAG COMMENT: IN AS MUCH AS SHIPS SEEMED TO BE ONLY TARGETS AND LACK OF CONFIRMATORY DETAILS BELIEVE REPORT OF TU-four ERRONEOUS. The Black Vault’s archive entry notes that this cable reports a disputed assertion by the Taiwanese government regarding a TU-four aircraft bombing the Tachen Islands on January tenth, nineteen fifty-five. U.S. observers disputed the claim, stating no TU-four aircraft were present. Russian language radio transmissions were noted in the area around this time.
