What did the declassified documents reveal?

Declassified. Today we present a declassified C-I-A record concerning the threat of Chinese Communist air power, a top secret meeting minute from October twenty-second, nineteen-fifty-nine. This document is notable for its specific details regarding the capabilities and advancements of the People's Republic of China's air force during the Cold War. You can find this record at archive.org/download/us-china-intel-CI01368. This document was declassified and released by the Central Intelligence Agency under the Freedom of Information Act. Its release helps illuminate the historical intelligence assessments of China's military strength in the late nineteen-fifties, providing a glimpse into the concerns of U.S. and allied intelligence communities at the time. The document is titled, "Threat of Chinese Communist Air Power." Participants for the United States included Under Secretary of State Douglas Dillon, Ambassador Everett F. Drumright, Mr. Graham Martin, Special Assistant to the Under Secretary, and Mr. James Wilson, Deputy Special Assistant for Mutual Security Coordination. For China, participants included Yu Ta-wei, Minister of National Defense, Peng Meng-chi, Chief of General Staff, General Lai Ming-tang, and General Ho Shai-lai, Chief of Chinese Military Mission to the United Nations. General S. K. Hu, Chief of Liaison Bureau, M-N-D, and Admiral Liang Hsu-chao, Deputy M-N-D, also attended. The time and place of the meeting was at the Office of the Minister of National Defense, October twenty-second, nineteen-fifty-nine. The Minister exhibited a number of air photographs of typical Communist air fields, showing the very large dispersal areas and the seven-thousand-foot runways, which have recently been extended to ten-thousand feet, some of them very recently. At an air field near Tientsin, G-R-O reconnaissance photographed ten aircraft which looked like M-I-G-twenty-ones. The photo was shown to the Under Secretary and his party. The Communists broadcast the other day that their planes shot down four G-R-O R-B-fifty-seven aircraft, but they did not say specifically that they had used this new type of aircraft. In this connection, the Minister noted that formerly penetration by G-R-O aircraft over the mainland had been relatively easy, but it has become very much more difficult as a result of the Communists' tightening up of their radar net. The Black Vault’s archive notes that this document provides a snapshot of the intelligence assessments regarding the growing threat of Chinese Communist air power in the late nineteen-fifties. It highlights the perceived advancement in aircraft technology and radar capabilities, indicating a significant concern for U.S. and allied forces regarding reconnaissance and air superiority in the region. This is what the public record looks like at its most ordinary. You can find more documents like this at storyflo.com and the canonical URL for this document…
