The Minister exhibited a number of air photographs of typical Communist air fields, showing the very large dispersal areas and the seven-thousand-foot runways, which have recently been extended to ten-thousand feet, some of them very recently. At an air field near Tientsin, G-R-O reconnaissance photographed ten aircraft which looked like M-I-G-twenty-ones. The photo was shown to the Under Secretary and his party. The Communists broadcast the other day that their planes shot down four G-R-O R-B-fifty-seven aircraft, but they did not say specifically that they had used this new type of aircraft. In this connection, the Minister noted that formerly penetration by G-R-O aircraft over the mainland had been relatively easy, but it has become very much more difficult as a result of the Communists' tightening up of their radar net.
