It was declassified by the C-I-A on August twenty-eighth, two thousand twenty. MEMORANDUM FOR: The Director of Central Intelligence. SUBJECT: Preliminary Comment on G-R-C one three six, flown on December twenty-seventh, nineteen sixty-two. One. This mission was successful in providing several items of new intelligence despite the fact that many targets were obscured by adverse weather. Two. Jet fighter strength at Kunming has been increased. The flight of at least twenty jet fighters to this field was reflected in communications intelligence on December twenty-fifth. The mission confirmed at least fifty-six M-I-G-type fighters on the field on December twenty-seventh. At least one regiment of jet fighters, about thirty aircraft, has been based at Kunming for a number of years. Whether this recent deployment represents a rotation of units or a permanent augmentation cannot yet be determined. However, there are some indications that [one and a half lines redacted under exemption B one]. There have been some recent improvements in the Southwest China, Kunming, Air Defense District involving the establishment of two new sub-sector filter centers. Three. Several barracks areas were disclosed. One at Mengtzu, about forty-five miles north of the North Vietnamese border on the rail line between Hanoi and Kunming contains about two hundred seventy-five barracks. Another at Wenshan, farther to the east on the Sino-Vietnam border, contains about two hundred thirty barracks. These disclosures, together with information reported in the North Vietnamese SitSum, indicate that the Chinese have garrison facilities for about one hundred thousand troops along the southern Yunnan border area between Wenshan and Fohai near the Burma border. We estimate that at the present time there are probably about thirty-five thousand Chinese troops in this area. Other smaller garrison areas were disclosed at Tung Lo with one hundred sixty-four barracks and at Kuan Hu with fifty barracks. Both locations are in the general Nanning area. Four. The rail line between Nanning and Langson in North Vietnam was covered as was the section between Kunming and Lao Kay. Marshalling yards at Kunming, Pinghsiang, and Dong Dang were covered.
