This is Declassified. Today, a Central Intelligence Agency intelligence report from March nineteen-sixty-five, titled "High Performance Aircraft, Southeast China." The document begins: TOP SECRET. March nineteen-sixty-five. HIGH PERFORMANCE AIRCRAFT, SOUTHEAST CHINA. Paragraph one. This mission reveals the deployment of small numbers of Farmer aircraft to several airfields in South and Southeast China. It is the first time this type aircraft has been observed at any of these fields. Paragraph three. Farmer aircraft have now been observed at sixteen airfields throughout China. Lu-Chiao Airfield. This mission reveals three Farmer, seventeen Fagol slash Fresco, and two Colt. Weather conditions in the Southeast China area were generally unfavorable for flight activity at that time. Ten jet fighters flew from Ning-Po to Lu-Chiao and four more followed. Four jet fighters, probably Mig-nineteens, flew from probably Ching-Tao slash Liu-Ting to Lu-Chiao. Speeds noted in this exercise exceeded those [one line redacted under exemption B1]. The report concludes with a note: "These notes have been prepared for briefing purposes only and should not be used for detailed analytical work. Their use should be restricted to the particular briefing board(s) they were prepared for and must be considered valid only for the reporting period as indicated by the date of issue. Group seven. Excluded from automatic downgrading and declassification." According to The Black Vault's archive entry, this report illustrates the monitoring of Chinese military assets by U.S. intelligence, specifically focusing on the types and locations of high-performance aircraft. The frequent mention of "Farmer" aircraft refers to the Mig-nineteen, a Soviet-designed supersonic jet fighter operated by China during that period.
