At twenty-one-hundred: "U.S.-J-seven-ninety reports US fighters definitely engaging CHICOM M-I-G-s...still no confirmation from C-I-N-C-P-A-C." At twenty-two-fifteen: "Mr. Smith briefed; said call Mr. Bundy immediately with what we have." At twenty-two-twenty: "Mr. Bundy briefed; asked that we get note to President." At twenty-two-forty-nine: "Note delivered. (attached)." The log continues to the following day. At zero-hundred-zero-two: "Mr. Smith called; briefed on U.S.-CHICOM dogfight and loss of F-four-B; A-P item on [redacted] sentence... and fact White House spokesman (presumably press) had no comment." At zero-one-thirty: "Mr. Cooper called; said he just got call from Hertz' brother in V-A and he most upset re press reporting of trial and death sentence of [redacted] saboteur; D-O briefed him on what we had; he to call State." At zero-three-thirty-seven: "Conferred with State who had talked with Emb Saigon re Hertz. Emb has followed no comment policy re press; suggests State give Hertz' brother quiet reassurances and caution him against access to press. State has done this...brother calmed a bit." At zero-seven-thirty: "Wrap-up on strike and CHICOM M-I-G encounter delivered to President. (N-M-C-C General Cox had just called stating the President had queried them twice during night, at twelve-thirty and zero-four-hundred...)"
