Aside from ‘cultural revolution’ accusations, clandestine information has suggested independently that an anti‑regime incident may have occurred in early 1966. A March report quoted a Japanese Communist Party source saying that a pro‑Soviet coup had taken place in China during the previous month and that Mao had been put under house arrest.
