This is what is known as ‘Mao’s thoughts.’ In China today, they are credited with almost miraculous power, although for the most part they are a collection of tired old clichés like ‘all power comes out of the barrel of a gun,’ or ‘be resolute, fear no sacrifice, and surmount every difficulty to win victory.’” The author continues with anecdotal examples that illustrate the pervasiveness of Mao’s thought. He notes that “the Russians, who have been known to quote Marx and Lenin, find Mao’s thought a bit silly. The man was denounced and purged because everyone in China knows that a study of Chairman Mao’s work gives immediate results.” Further examples include a claim that a doctor sewed back a finger because of Mao’s thought, a forestry conference that said studying Mao would grow better trees, and a report that fighter pilots shouted Mao quotations over the intercom as they started a dogfight, enabling them to shoot down a Nationalist aircraft. A Chinese worker who broke an arm, a leg, and several ribs allegedly refused sick leave because Mao’s thought enabled him to live with his pain. The briefing then shifts to political analysis.
