He thought these activities would not have the purpose of making serious gains, but would be designed only for harassment. The United States did not want to assign any high degree of probability to this contingency, but thought it at least possible. He indicated that the Chinese government would avoid provocations during a tense situation. On June ninth, the Chinese defense readiness condition was reported to have moved from condition three to condition four, then downgraded back to the normal condition of four after news was received concerning the Egyptian acceptance of a cease‑fire. During the past week, Chinese air reaction to United States air patrols over the Strait has been somewhat more intense than normal. The number of Chinese aircraft reacting to United States patrols has been larger than normal and they have flown farther east toward the mainland coast than ordinarily. However, there is no evidence that the Chinese intend to provoke any clash, and they appear simply to be exhibiting a converse of United States concern, suspecting that the United States might take advantage of the tense situation elsewhere.
