The authors conclude that it is unlikely that Mao Zedong will achieve sufficient political stability in the Cultural Revolution to permit a new economic initiative similar to the Great Leap Forward. When Mao disappears from the scene, a period of confused contestation for power will probably follow, during which economic recovery will be neither rapid nor certain. The unfavorable food‑to‑population ratio, the economic costs and imbalances inherent in the military program, and shortcomings in the educational system are problems likely to persist for at least a decade.
