DISPERSION OF MILITARY HARDWARE AND THE UNITY OF THE PLA Peking has developed a comprehensive system for producing and distributing material to the People’s Liberation Army. Control is highly centralized. Although production facilities for major military equipment lie, in large part, around the industrial centers of China, one military region can produce internally all categories of military equipment. Military production in China is dependent upon a well‑developed network which funnels raw material and component parts from every part of China to the factories which produce the end items. Distribution of military goods also follows the same inter‑regional pattern with Peking remaining the nerve center. Some military regions are much better equipped than others in respect to the production of end items of military hardware. The Shenyang region, with nearly twenty percent of the PLA’s assets within its borders, is closest to being able to provide itself with conventional weapons and other equipment. Interdependency among the military regions becomes a matter of vital necessity. Production pattern for selected military end items: The Shenyang aircraft industry provides China with the only present domestic supply of military aircraft.
