In foreign trade, import growth again reached double‑digits; exports, too, made a good, but less spectacular recovery.” Industrial growth continued to accelerate in July through September, reaching twelve point seven percent, before easing to ten point five percent in the fourth quarter. In heavy industry, output grew at a double‑digit clip all year; the rate of increase rose to thirteen point six percent in the third quarter and then slipped back to ten point zero percent in the final three months, the slowest quarterly growth since the final quarter of nineteen eighty‑two. A fall‑off in energy production contributed, directly and indirectly, to this fourth‑quarter decline. Machinery and equipment were the strongest performers in the second half. Data for January through November show four major product lines with growth rates higher than the overall heavy‑industry average: power‑generating equipment grew seventy‑three point eight percent, mining equipment forty‑eight point five percent, motor vehicles twenty‑three point seven percent, and metal‑cutting machine tools eighteen point one percent. Building‑materials industries continued rapid expansion; cement output grew twelve point six percent and plate‑glass production fifteen point one percent in the same period. Consumer‑durables output posted large gains, ranging from nine point five percent for watches to forty‑six point six percent for washing machines and ninety‑seven point eight percent for refrigerators. Only sewing machines, down fourteen point four percent, recorded less than strong growth. Textile and fiber industries performed relatively poorly: synthetic‑fiber output grew only six point two percent, while overall cloth production dropped one point six percent.
