China‑Vietnam‑Cambodia: Restrained Response Fighting continued yesterday at the non‑Communist Cambodian resistance base at Nong Sumety, with Vietnamese troops occupying the western side of the camp. There has been little evident Chinese military activity along the Sino‑Vietnamese border in response to Vietnam’s attack on Tuesday at Nong Samet. Meanwhile, commentary in the Chinese press on the sixth anniversary of the Vietnamese invasion of Cambodia has been muted. The Chinese may be limiting their response until Soviet First Deputy Premier Arshipov leaves China tomorrow. In any case, Chinese restraint does not reflect a change in policy. Chinese leaders announced on Arshipov’s arrival that Moscow’s continued support to Vietnam remains a key obstacle to better Sino‑Soviet political relations. The archive description notes that this intelligence summary provides a snapshot of United States assessments of regional dynamics in late 1984, specifically the limited Chinese response to Vietnamese military actions in Cambodia and the broader context of Sino‑Soviet relations. This is what the public record looks like at its most ordinary. storyflo.com https://archive.org/download/us-china-intel-CI02259/CI02259djvu.txt
