What did the declassified documents reveal?

This episode opens with a declassified Central Intelligence Agency memorandum concerning missing Chinese military leaders, dated sixteen August, nineteen seventy‑two. The document is notable because it enumerates over one hundred senior officers who disappeared from public view during the turbulent period following the Lin Piao purge, providing a rare snapshot of internal Chinese military analysis during the Cultural Revolution. The memorandum was released in May, two thousand seven, under Executive Order one two nine five eight, sections three point three and six point two. The release was made through The Black Vault, which posted the full text on its archive on the same date. No specific Freedom of Information Act case number is cited in the release notes; the declassification authority is the Director of Central Intelligence, acting under the statutory exemptions for classified intelligence. Approved for release. Date: May, two thousand seven. Executive Order one two nine five eight, paragraph three point three, subparagraph one; paragraph three point three, subparagraph six; paragraph six point two, subparagraph c. Directorate of Intelligence Research. Aid: Missing Chinese Military Leaders. Reference title: POLO XLVIX. August, nineteen seventy‑two. RSS number zero zero five eight slash seven two – SECRET. Central Intelligence Agency. Directorate of Intelligence. Sixteen August, nineteen seventy‑two. Research aid: Missing Chinese Military Leaders. This memorandum provides a checklist of one hundred seven of the two hundred, regarded in general as the most important of the lot. Thirty of the missing are those named in Party documents and briefings as members of Lin’s “counter‑revolutionary conspiratorial clique.” The remainder are missing for presently unknown reasons, but there are grounds for belief that a substantial number have been or will be purged for alleged complicity or sympathy with Lin’s group. The most important and well‑known of the thirty were the six full members of the Politburo who, through concurrent posts, held the chief positions in command‑and‑control of the People’s Liberation Army. Eleven other central military leaders have been identified as fellow conspirators; a few of them were previously little known, but most were known or believed to be close to the six principals, and most were Air Force officers. Thirteen regional figures—most of them in the Nanking and Canton Military Regions, which Chairman Mao toured immediately prior to…
