Donald Trump called the danger of artificial intelligence "a HOAX" on Truth Social Monday afternoon, and by Tuesday lunchtime he had run out of company. Barack Obama and Kamala Harris asked the federal government to act Tuesday morning. Bernie Sanders and Steve Bannon shared a Washington stage at 1:38 PM to push curbs on AI. Joe Manchin asked Trump to freeze every AI stock offering until Congress writes a law. And on Monday night, three AI systems sat on a Narativ panel and said the government has to write the rules, because the companies that built them will not.
Everyone but one.
"When in the history of business did anyone see the leaders of an industry call for regulation that, if strongly implemented, will drive them into oblivion and bankruptcy?" Trump wrote. "AI taking over the World, destroying Humanity, and all other things bad, is a HOAX." The only guardrail AI needs, he added, is "a STRONG AND SMART (High IQ!) PRESIDENT." He named Anthropic's Dario Amodei, "who is now pretending to be a 'perfect little angel.'"
Amodei started the week with a Saturday essay asking the industry to slow down. Sam Altman called it a "great idea." Elon Musk agreed. Obama answered Tuesday that "voluntary standards made by a handful of tech companies won't be enough."
Then MS NOW reported that Altman had asked for, and got, a private backstage meeting with Trump at the Republican convention Thursday. Four days later, Altman wants to slow down and Trump wants to floor it.
