This is perhaps the most important reminder of all:
The Tell Me 3 Good Things practice is not instead of the hard things.
When I ask you to Tell Me 3 Good Things, it’s not to ignore the hard things, or avoid them, or pretend that everything is great and there are no problems in our lives or in the world.
Goodness knows we all face challenges - personal, familial, communal, societal, and global challenges. We’re living in challenging times. We might be exhausted or overwhelmed or anxious or scared - or sick. We might be all of the above.
The Tell Me 3 Good Things practice is precisely because hard things happen in our lives and in the world.
Because when we are faced with challenges, it can be easy to shrink our thinking, or our outlook, in response. It can be easy to become mired in those challenges, and to forget that there is also delight, and kindness, and beauty in the world.
There is birdsong, and there are cups of tea, and there is clothing on our bodies to keep us warm.
It can be easy, in the face of challenge, to forget about the good things. It can be easy to think it’s silly or self-indulgent to give our attention to the clean sheets on our beds, or the perfect parking spaces, or the color of the changing leaves, when people are hurting - or when maybe we are hurting.
But this is exactly when - and why - we need to remember that there is goodness.
It’s how we keep going in the face of challenge. It’s how we get out of bed in the morning. It’s how we show up to help each other.
It’s how we hold onto hope.
It’s how we hold onto a vision for a brighter day.
By holding the good things close to our minds and our hearts.
This practice is not instead of the hard things - this practice is so that we have the strength and the courage to face the hard things. And it’s how we bring more goodness into our midst.
This is why we practice.
