**Why Am I So Tired After Being Around People? **It Might Be ADHD Masking
You leave the party, the meeting, or the coffee date, and you’re wiped out in a way that doesn’t match what actually happened. Or you’ve been showing up for people for years, and still have a quiet sense that nobody really gets you.
If that sounds familiar, it’s worth asking whether you might be masking ADHD traits.
Masking is the work of hiding, managing, or compensating for parts of yourself so you fit what’s expected. It often happens automatically, which is why so many high-masking ADHDers (and AuDHDers) don’t realize they’re doing it. They just know they’re exhausted.
A free resource to help you see it more clearly
I put together an 8-page guide that includes:
40 signs of masking ADHD (and AuDHD). These are the subtle, often-missed ways masking shows up in daily life.
How each sign maps onto the DSM-5-TR, the current diagnostic criteria clinicians use to assess for ADHD and AuDHD. This connects your lived experience to the language professionals use.
Who it’s for
Anyone preparing for an ADHD or AuDHD assessment
Anyone exploring whether ADHD or AuDHD fits their experience
Clinicians who want to better recognize high-masking presentations in their clients
Partners, parents, friends, and employers who want to understand an ADHDer in their life
Anyone who wants something concrete to bring to their therapist, coach, partner, or doctor
Why masking matters
Masking takes real energy, and none of us has an unlimited supply. Over time, that constant effort can feed into exhaustion, anxiety, depression, chronic illness, and burnout.
It can also hide your wiring from the very people trying to understand it, including you. That can lead to misdiagnosis, missed diagnosis, or years of wondering why you feel so different from how you appear.
And it can get in the way of real connection. When you only let people see the parts of you that feel acceptable, it’s hard to feel truly known by them.
Understanding how you mask is the first step toward choosing when you need to, and when you don’t.
