I wondered if, like humans, this mama bear worried about the future for her cub? I wondered if she worried about there not being enough denning habitat left after decades of old growth logging, or the shifting conditions along these tidal lines, or the nearby towns that kept expanding out into their homes?
With that knowledge of how to survive, also comes a series of guidelines for how to be.
But the times are changing, and they’re changing fast.
Many of the skills or things we all learned growing up are no longer relevant, and yet we carry them with us as if they were. We hang onto them instead of evaluating the terrain around us, adapting to the changes coming, and perpetually growing to become better versions of ourselves.
Maybe its time we drop the things that no longer serve us, to be more considerate and tuned in to the world we’re not only experiencing, but the futures we want to create.
These bears, after all, don’t have a voice in climate policy discussions, shareholder meetings, or town halls, and yet they are directly impacted by what occurs there. It’s up to us to take accountability for our impacts on others through the systems we created that inherently exclude them in favour of capital and convenience. As participants within these system in some capacity, we all have a responsibility to speak up for those not represented, to change our behaviours, and act as stewards advocating on their behalf, for their right to inherit healthy, liveable futures.
Futures in which us human-people, can live alongside all the non-human people we share this world with and rely on, all thriving together to support our families and raise our children in a world filled with hope, not despair.
After all, we’re all just a bunch of wild animals, and we’re all in this together.
Let’s take care of each other.
