Tuesday, the House ** narrowly passed a Democrat** measure to rein in President Trump’s power to deal militarily with Iran under the 1973 War Powers Act. Seven Republicans joined with the Democrats to pass it.
This is essentially symbolic, since it’s unlikely to pass the Senate; and even if it did, Trump would veto it. There’s also the issue that many legal scholars consider the War Powers Act to be unconstitutional, but it just hasn’t been tested in court yet. Article I gives the executive branch the sole authority to conduct military operations once they begin, and Congress can’t pass a bill to take that power away. The Founders wisely decided that once the US was in a war and facing time-sensitive, life-or-death decisions, the nation couldn’t wait for hundreds of squabbling politicians to agree on what to do.
It’s yet another reason why Democrats want to shred the Constitution, The Founders were smart enough to anticipate what would happen if future citizens were ever foolish enough to elect the worst possible leaders, and they built in guardrails to prevent that. Somehow, those guardrails just keep obstructing the current Democratic agenda. Funny, isn’t it?
Vice President J.D. Vance said he understands the impatience of the American people in wanting the conflict with Iran to end, “but fundamentally what’s happening right now is that the United States is not engaged in aggressive operations. We’re just not.” He said that what’s happening now is that Iran is occasionally shooting at commercial shipping, “usually not successfully.”
Vance said the first phase of the operation was to “destroy the nuclear program, destroy their conventional military, destroy their ability to project power in a way that they were able to even a couple of years ago.” He said the second phase will begin in a couple of months, and that is to “ensure that they’re not able to rebuild and try to maintain as much global stability in the wake of that.”
Despite reports of entities with ties to China aiding Iran militarily, China’s foreign minister said that China “does not want to see regional tensions to spill over further into Yemen and the Red Sea.” He urged the US and Iran to “take effective measures to reopen the Strait of Hormuz at an early date.” President Trump will meet in Washington next week with China’s President, and we assume this issue will come up.
Amnesty International just released a 1,000+ page report on Iran’s brutal crackdown on 2022’s Woman Life Freedom Uprising. The report accuses the Tehran regime of thousands of crimes against peaceful protesters, including “murder, torture, enforced disappearance, imprisonment, rape and persecution on political, gender, ethnic and religious grounds in order to crush the uprising “ They fired military weapons into crowds and at fleeing protesters, and shot unarmed citizens who posed no threat at point-blank range. The report identifies 87 Iranian officials “who should be criminally investigated for crimes against humanity.”
So if you know anyone who’s taken to social media to support Iran, drop them a link to this report and ask why they’re supporting widespread crimes against humanity and the mass murder of innocent protesters. We predict that they’ll accuse you of being a Trump supporter, which they apparently think is worse.
The world entered a new age Tuesday when Air Force Secretary Troy Meink ** admitted for the first time** that the US has weapons deployed in space.
In a speech titled “Advancing Combat Power in Air and Space” at the Air & Space Forces Association’s annual conference in Maryland, Meink said, “Today, we continue to ensure we remain ready to meet the challenges of evolving threats wherever they exist. This is why the United States now has on-orbit space control weapons capable of defending the joint force against hostile adversary actions.”
Meink gave no further details on what these space weapons are, but he told a questioner that “that phrase was very well thought out.” He added, “Our maintaining and being able to count on those space capabilities is important, and as everybody knows, there have been many who have developed capabilities to take those away from us, to threaten those things. So it is critically important that we maintain our dominance not only in the air but in space.
“So, we’ve had to take steps to make sure that when we’re threatened, we can take care of that,”
This may come as terrifying news to some, but frankly, if there are going to be “frickin’ laser beams in space,” we prefer that the USA have control of them.
Rep. Ilhan Omar has been cleared of wrongdoing by the laughably-named Office of Congressional Conduct, despite her jaw-dropping “correction” of her financial disclosure statement. She initially reported that she and her husband had assets of between $6 million and $30 million; then after questions about her sudden riches emerged, she “corrected” that to assets of between $18,000 and $95,000. That’s quite a correction.
The Office of Congressional Conduct voted 5-1 to dismiss the allegations after deciding that she didn’t “knowingly” file false information. She just didn’t understand that when you figure a business’s net worth, you have to SUBTRACT the liabilities from the assets. Hence the term, “NET value.”
Michael A. Letts at PJ Media ** has more on this story**, along with some further questions about Omar that need to be investigated and shouldn’t be explained away by simply accepting the excuse that she’s an idiot, as believable as that might be.
We’ll remind you that she is one of the leaders of a Congressional socialist movement to abolish capitalism and tax away the wealth of billionaires, on the presumption that she knows more about how the economy works than Elon Musk does.
Socialist Democrat Florida Senate candidate Angie Nixon, whose income is around $270,000 a year, wants to seize rich people’s money to pay for free stuff for other people. But ** she’s outraged at the idea** that she should have to pay income taxes, calling it “crazy.” She also refuses to repay her federal student loan debt, declaring in 2023 that she’s above that and “Education supposed to be free.”
Basic Rule of Life #4: NOTHING you get from the government is “free.” It’s paid for either from taxing you, or taxing someone richer who now can’t use that money to hire you. So whenever you demand anything “free” from the government, think long and hard about whether that “free” thing is worth what it’s going to cost you.
Despite predictions that higher gas prices would lead to a slump in consumer spending in August, the Commerce Department ** reported Wednesday** that retail sales rose by 1.1% (1.2% if you include gas sales.) Economists had predicted a rise in retail spending of only 0.5%. Consumer buying was up across all sectors, including appliances, clothing, cars, sporting goods and yes, even books.
President Trump’s promise of a $5,000 Trump dividend check to every adult American if the Republicans hold Congress and protect his agenda was widely mocked as unworkable. But ** here’s a suggestion** for something similar that could be created without exploding the national debt. The only caveat: it wouldn’t necessarily be $5,000, and it would be in the form of a tax rebate only to people who actually paid taxes. So more bad news for Hunter Biden.
Most Satisfying Story of the Day: The illegal alien gang member with a long criminal record who famously declared to ICE agents, “I am not going back to Haiti...you feel me? F--- Trump! Biden forever, bro!” ** is going back to Haiti**.
