On this Columbus Day, we look at the historical controversies surrounding Christopher Columbus. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent delivered a pointed response to Sen. Elizabeth Warren in their ongoing dispute over economic policy. Texas Senate candidate James Talaricowas questioned this weekend about an unexplained absence from the campaign trail. Federal agents searched Rep. Ilhan Omar’s Washington home as part of an investigation, and much more.
Humble yourselves there under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: casting all your care upon him, for he careth for you. 1 Peter 5:6-7
Happy Columbus Day! This is one of those rare occasions when the date of Columbus’s arrival in the New World (October 12, 1492, for current public school students) actually falls on a Monday, so the holiday doesn’t have to be moved. Yes, Columbus discovered America so that government and bank employees could have a three-day weekend. It’s funny how so many liberal bureaucrats rail against Columbus, but they don’t complain about taking Monday off in his honor. Then again, they also make pious “land acknowledgements,” but they never give their houses to any local tribes.
Of course, they can always claim they’re observing “Indigenous People’s Day,” a competing anti-Columbus holiday that could have been placed on any other date, but that would have made it harder for Democrats to push for replacing Columbus Day with it. It’s not a federal holiday – yet – and we suspect it won’t replace Columbus Day until it becomes an official federal holiday because no matter how much virtue signaling the leftists in DC do, they’re not giving up a paid Monday off.
The post office and all non-essential government offices are closed. That’s another thing we should thank Christopher Columbus for: helping us identify non-essential government offices so we can get rid of them.
One of the best ways to observe Columbus Day is to spend a little time learning about the real history of America instead of the leftist propaganda spewed by all the statue-topplers. We suggest starting with this Substack essay by Rod D. Martin, which examines and refutes a number of widespread claims, from Columbus committing “genocide” (a word leftists use a lot but don’t seem to understand) to the false notion that the Native Peoples were peaceful environmentalists, a bit of “history” they seem to have gleaned from Disney cartoons. .
The truth is that, while there were undoubtedly atrocities and injustices, up to 90% of the Native Americans actually died from imported diseases such as smallpox that they had no resistance to before the westward expansion ever began. The mass die-off wasn’t intentional, since nobody at the time even knew germs existed. Not quite the narrative that young people are being fed these days. And that’s just the beginning.
It’s eye-opening to read what both sides of the conflict were actually experiencing at the time instead of judging them by contemporary standards. Read it all.
P.S. This ** is an interesting article** about how Italian-Americans are fighting back against the left’s war on Columbus and American history. It’s always struck us as odd that they claim to respect immigrants so much, but that doesn’t apply to Italian immigrants. Columbus was one of those.
As if we needed any more reasons to love Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, he replied to the countless demands for information from Senator, Spirit Airlines slayer and fake Native American Elizabeth Warren with ** a letter offering to send her a copy of “Foreign Exchange for Dummies.**” Bessent has previously described Warren as “economically illiterate.” He added a hand-written PS wishing a “Happy Indigenous People’s Day in advance to you and your family!”
