You might recall Rebekah Jones as the former Florida Department of Health data scientist who was fired in 2020 by Governor DeSantis’s administration after refusing to manipulate data during the pandemic. In 2022, Florida’s Office of Inspector General dismissed her whistleblower complaint. The past few years have resulted in litigation, controversy, and back-and-forth accusations, with some praising Jones for standing up to corruption and others disparaging her using several unsavory characterizations, such as “conspiracy theorist.”
I mention all this because these past stories will be used by some of Israel’s defenders to discount her experience in the West Bank.
Jones just returned home after spending time with Palestinian community members who face occupation, discrimination, and a system of apartheid. Israeli settlers are increasingly more violent, belligerent, and emboldened by the current government, which has extremist Itamar Ben Gvir as its national security minister.
During the summer, Rep. Ro Khanna shared how his delegation was detained for over an hour by armed Israeli settlers and the military in the West Bank. We’ve also seen footage of Israeli settlers harassing and attacking CNN and NBC journalists. Earlier this week, Republicans and John Fetterman blocked a Democratic resolution brought by Senator Van Hollen that would require the State Department to report on violence by Israeli settlers on US citizens in the West Bank.
Jones provides video and her own experiences of what her group of American visitors experienced in the West Bank.
Give it a watch and ask yourselves why is your taxpayer money going to Israel?
