When you sit down to meditate, you may find that you are restless, bored or agitated. All of this belongs to your thoughts and feelings. The awareness in which they come and go, the same awareness you refer to every time you say ‘I am’, stays as open and at peace as it always is.
Ask yourself, ‘What is the nature of the awareness that “I am”?’ The mind asks the question, but do not let the mind answer it. The mind is a bundle of thoughts and perceptions. Thoughts and perceptions are not aware. They are what you, awareness, are aware of. So, thoughts and perceptions know nothing of awareness, or indeed of anything else. Only awareness is aware, so only awareness knows anything about itself. And you are that awareness.
You are now having the experience of being aware. You know your self intimately. So, you, awareness, what is your experience of your self? Do you need somebody else to tell you the nature of awareness? No. You know your self so well.
