Romans 1, Part 1. On the anger of a Father who grieves.

For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth.— Romans 1:18

In the verses just before this one, Paul calls the gospel the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes (Rom 1:16). We expect him to unfold that next. Grace, welcome, forgiveness. Instead his next sentence begins with wrath.

And he stays there. From this verse to 3:20, Paul builds a long case. First against the Gentile world (1:18–32), then against his own people (2:1–3:8), then against all of us together (3:9–20). Only then does he write But now (Rom 3:21).

The order is deliberate. Jesus said those who are well have no need of a physician (Mark 2:17). A cure means nothing to someone who feels fine. And Rome felt fine. It was the capital of the empire, sure of its gods, its laws, its greatness. If Paul had skipped the diagnosis, “salvation” would have been a word with no shape. Saved from what?

I’ll admit this is a verse I have often read quickly, on my way to the better parts. I don’t think Paul meant it to be read quickly.

Look at the two verses side by side. In verse 17, the righteousness of God is revealed. In verse 18, the wrath of God is revealed. Paul uses the same Greek verb both times, apokalyptetai (ἀποκαλύπτεται), and he links the verses with a small word: for.

So wrath is not the opposite of the gospel. It belongs inside the same unveiling. The cross shows how much God loves us, and it also shows how seriously He takes what we have done. A rescue only makes sense if the danger is real.

Both verbs are also present tense. The wrath is being revealed now. What does it look like? Three times the chapter answers: God gave them up (Rom 1:24, 26, 28). Many commentators read this as the shape of wrath in this passage. Not a lightning bolt, but a letting go. God allows people to have the life they kept insisting on. Paul will speak elsewhere of a day of wrath still to come (Rom 2:5). But the wrath already at work looks like a door left open behind someone who walked out.

Here is where the word trips us. “Wrath” sounds like a temper. A short fuse. A God who has finally had enough. Isaiah gives us a very different picture. He opens his book with God calling heaven and earth to listen:

Children have I reared and brought up, but they have rebelled against me.— Isaiah 1:2

Then comes the line that stings. The ox knows its owner (Isa 1:3), and the donkey knows its master’s feeding trough. His own people do not. This is not a judge reading a verdict from a high bench. It is a parent at the window long after dark, watching the road, knowing exactly what is out there.

Anyone who has waited like that knows what happens next. Something starts to burn on the inside. It is not quite anger and not quite sorrow. It is both at once, and it does not cool until the child is home. I think it comes closer to what Isaiah heard than the word “wrath” usually lets us hear.

This does not soften wrath. God’s anger against sin is real, and it flows from His holiness and justice as well as His love. But a Father who burns is not a Father who shrugs. A God who felt nothing about our sin would be a God who felt nothing about us.

Most of us want the cure without the diagnosis. We would rather hear that we are loved than hear why we need rescuing. But Paul tells the hard truth first because he knows what comes after it.

So here is the question this verse leaves on the table. Would we really want a God who was never troubled by what we have done? Indifference can feel like kindness for a while. It is not love.

Romans 1:18 is Paul’s first word, not his last. He is clearing ground for two words that will turn his whole argument around: But now (Rom 3:21). We cannot hear how glorious that rescue is until we know what we were rescued from. And the anger he describes is not the anger of someone who has stopped caring, or who has given up on us.

God is not angry because He stopped loving us. He is angry because He never did.
