Crypto’s largest hack is ending with users made whole, but only because Binance’s balance sheet and stablecoin issuers’ freeze powers did the protecting that decentralization was supposed to make unnecessary.

WHAT MATTERS
**State of play: **Binance is putting $6.34B of its own reserves toward the largest exchange hack on record, and the root cause is notable: a compromised DevOps laptop, not a key leak.
Binance already holds about $5B of the affected tokens and is buying the remaining $1.3B through market and OTC channels, though thin liquidity could slow settlement.
Industry partners froze roughly $3B on top of that, led by Tether at $1.57B and Circle at over $800M, with Ripple and World Liberty Financial adding smaller freezes.
TRM Labs says the attack resembles North Korean operations such as the $1.5B Bybit breach, but Binance has not named an attacker.
Withdrawals are still suspended and deposits stay open, while Aave froze its V3 and V4 markets so the hacker could not borrow against the stolen funds.
BNB dropped more than 5.5% when the news broke, and Binance.US says it was not affected.
**Why it matters: **Only Binance could absorb a $6.3B loss without users feeling it, so the industry’s real safety net sits with one company.
**Our take: **Tether and Circle recovered about $3B within hours by blacklisting addresses. Crypto’s best defense came from centralized freeze powers, which weakens the censorship-resistance pitch.
**For builders and investors: **One engineer’s laptop led to a container that could submit withdrawals, so internal access deserves the same scrutiny as key custody. Proof-of-reserves reports don’t show how much an exchange’s safety depends on its balance sheet and on issuers’ cooperation.

INSIGHTS
Strategy’s $19.5B quarter comes almost entirely from marking its bitcoin to market, while the cash it actually owes is growing through a preferred-stock machine that will now pay dividends every day and depends on BTC staying high.
A $20.91B bitcoin gain drove the result, up from $2.79B in net income a year earlier, while software revenue fell 3% to $125.4M.
Strategy held 848,517 BTC as of Oct 25, up 26% year to date, and says its Digital Credit products now total $16B in notional value across ten listed securities.
Holders of STRC, STRF, STRK and STRD approved daily dividends with 99.3% of votes; STRC pays first on Nov 2 and the other three follow on Jan 4.
K33 estimates STRC alone added $725M to annual dividend obligations, and Strategy spent $2.04B buying back STRC to restore it.
CFO Andrew Kang leaves on Nov 5 and COO Reza Virasteh becomes CFO in January 2027, while MSTR fell about 3.5% after hours.
DEAL FLOWS
*Deal flows soared this week - we saw $1.2B in deals 💼 *
ICE’s deal splits onchain perps into three layers, with Hyperliquid running the tech, TradeXYZ designing the markets, and NYSE’s parent owning the regulated exchange and clearing, which brings Hyperliquid into the US as infrastructure.
ICE will build dedicated exchange and clearing infrastructure for perps on crypto, equities, indices, commodities and forex, and is also taking a strategic stake in TradeXYZ.
Retail traders will get access through participating brokers and platforms instead of trading directly on Hyperliquid.
ICE CEO Jeffrey Sprecher pitched the perps as a way to capture growing global retail demand for short-term, around-the-clock trading, and as additive to ICE’s futures business rather than a replacement for it.
TradeXYZ earned the partnership by building HIP-3 markets on stocks, indices and commodities, part of a segment whose open interest hit $2.38B in April.
The deal still needs regulatory approval, but it builds on the CFTC’s no-action relief for US perps in May.
