“Democracy is the theory that the common people know what they want, and deserve to get it good and hard.” H.L. Mencken.
THE MORNING IN THREE
Democrats took the House and the Senate overnight, with upsets in Kansas, Texas and South Carolina on record turnout; ES indicates 7,649.50, up 0.69%, and Tesla and SpaceX fell after hours.
The long end sold into the result: the 10-year closed 4.95% and the 30-year 5.32%, each up 4bp, on a session the S&P 500 rose 0.36% and Brent fell for a third day.
Gold settled $3,938.00 and indicates $4,055.10, up 2.91%, with the dollar index down 0.55%.I’m going to let things percolate before I give me peanut gallery analysis, but a few thoughts:
Markets will like this. Remember, 19 of the last 19 post-midterm election periods have been rallies. Divided government will ease concerns of either side implementing ‘extreme’ policies.
Forget about ‘lame duck’; Trump will now be borderline radioactive for many Republicans. Results severely wound JD; look for Marco’s star to rise, and names like Youngkin and Haley get more play. Not surprised Haley is suddenly commenting publicly and on TV again.
AI will be under pressure due to increased concerns about regulatory increases, especially on the data center front. Watch for investigations into Big Pharma (what deals were made with the WH)?. Defense stocks will probably get hit.
THE CALL
**THE VOTE SETTLED EQUITY RISK AND LEFT CREDIT ALONE.**Vol fell 11% and high yield sits 18bp through its line. Short lenders, long fee streams. I’M WRONG IF high yield prints under 326bp.**THE LONG END IS PRICING THE REFUNDING.**Tens and thirties rose 4bp into a divided Congress and gold gapped 2.91%. Gold goes on. I’M WRONG IF a trimmed coupon takes the 10-year under 4.80%.**A BEATEN PRESIDENT HAS MORE REASON TO ESCALATE ABROAD.**The war is being blamed for the loss. Keep the Brent upside for the tail. I’M WRONG IF a transit accord is signed.**THIS IS MOSTLY ONE BET ON FRIDAY.**Credit and consumer resolve on the same labor print and I am long the argument in both. I’M WRONG IF payrolls beat and the 2-year closes over 4.65%.
The street has one word for a divided Congress this morning and the word is ‘risk-on’: fiscal expansion gets capped, supply pressure comes off the long end, the event is behind us. Credit never agreed to any of it; that is the main argument here and the rest hangs off it.
The long end is the secondary thesis and it points the same way (the same question, asked of a different desk). Where do the two of them land? On the lenders’ balance sheets, and that is why the sector section carries the trade.
Start with what came off and what did not.
Equity vol treated the count as finished. The VIX closed 20.83 and indicates 18.47, off 11.33%, and the event hedges came off with it.
High yield printed 343bp for 2 November, a third consecutive observation through the 325bp line that separates repricing from ‘stress’. One basis point tighter on the session equities decided the election was over; a market reversing an all-clear usually moves more than that. The benign version is that the index is simply slow, or that the calendar is doing the widening.
Investment grade is the one that changed character. It went from 86bp to 94bp inside a week, the widest print of 2026, while absorbing a $25 billion deal and a $20 billion deal. Paper clearing at a price is not paper being refused; the price moved 8bp and the issuers paid it.
The vote was supposed to fix the long end. A divided Congress caps spending, so the long end rallies; that is the trade the street had on before the count, and it did not pay.
Tens and thirties each did the opposite yesterday, and they did it on a session equities rose and crude fell for a third day.
A growth scare buys duration. A fiscal-relief trade buys duration. Neither bid showed up.
The 8:30 refunding against a preliminary $628 billion fourth-quarter borrowing guide is the reason, and the 20-year still yields more than the 30-year.
Gold answers the same question and answers it faster. A metal that gains 2.91% overnight with December hike odds near 75% and the dollar lower is being bought for what the government owes; the real rate had nothing to do with it. It could also be a thin overnight market squeezing shorts on a surprise, and that version gives the move back by the London close.
For this sector the result changes less than the headlines say.
Senate Banking goes to Warren and House Financial Services to Waters, against a Republican White House for two more years; the output of that arrangement is ‘oversight and confirmations’.
Bank capital runs through the agencies, so the capital-relief path survives the sweep intact. The consumer rulebook and crypto market structure do not.
Lenders keep the capital win and lose the rulebook win, and a Congress with subpoena power is a cost that lands on the balance-sheet names first.
THE CASE AGAINST.
CCC spreads tightened 8bp to 1319bp on the same observation that moved the high yield index 1bp. The riskiest tier in the market outperformed. Default risk repricing looks like CCC leading wider, and this is the opposite of that shape; the better explanation is supply and index composition, where a heavy calendar widens an index without any issuer in it being closer to trouble.
I can’t tell yet which of the two is running, and that is the open question under every credit line I own. What would tell the two apart is observable, and both legs print inside a week. The 3 November observation publishes today and a print back under 326bp settles it against me. And investment grade through 88bp takes the market-wide version off the table without high yield moving at all.
ADP at 8:15, consensus 67,000 against 90,000 prior, and ISM services at 10:00, estimate 54.8 against 54.9 with the prices subindex 74.0 prior. Services PMI at 9:45.
The quarterly refunding at 8:30, against that $628 billion guide, with a buyback of up to $6 billion in 10 to 20-year maturities.
EIA inventories at 10:30 after the API reported a 5.27 million barrel draw. The Riksbank is expected to raise 25bp today, the Bank of England tomorrow.
Qualcomm, Arm, AppLovin and Snap report after the close. The 3 November high yield observation publishes inside the session.
**AMD.**Earned $2.09 against $1.95 expected on revenue of $13.38 billion against $13.10 billion, closed $483.90 and indicates $514.00 after hours, up 6.2%. Semiconductors rose 2.63% into it. Demand evidence, arriving in a tape that spent last week selling the financing side of the same story; it is the cleanest argument the builders have had in two weeks.**Fabrinet.**Indicates $363.33, up 15.45%, on an earnings beat with guidance above consensus. Optical interconnect is the part of the build that ships against orders, so a supplier raising its guide is a demand print and not a funding one. The group gapping down on Qualcomm or Arm tonight is what ends it.**Hut 8.**Indicates $63.75, up 15.90%, on no stated news, with Cipher up 18.37% and Core Scientific up 13.87% beside it. The weakest balance sheets in the AI complex rallied hardest on the morning a Congress with oversight power arrived to ask who pays for the grid. Watch whether a signed lease shows up behind the move.
Behind the wall this morning:
FLOWS AND POSITIONING: the hedge that came off overnight, and which index actually won the night.
FINANCIALS: the bill the sweep hands the lenders, the two positioning expressions, and why the fee complex is the side I want.
DECISION TREE: where the weights are mine and subjective, and why term premium moved up ten.
Above the line is what I see this morning. Under it sits how I am leaning against it and the level that changes my mind on each piece. Subscribe at marketmusing.com.
