New Canaan, Connecticut, Police finally released portions of the January 15, 2026, body-camera footage from the confrontation between Family Court Fraud Warrior Project founder Dave Weigel and Zoali Alvarez. The tape answers one disputed question. It detonates several others.
The released footage shows police handing Weigel a misdemeanor summons and Promise to Appear. It also records two starkly different explanations from officers at the scene. One tells Weigel, “No, you’re not being arrested.” Another later says, “Technically, it’s an arrest.” An officer further states that the charging decision came from supervisors rather than the officers conducting the investigation.
Investigative journalist Richard Luthmann joins Weigel for a frame-by-frame examination of the footage, police paperwork, competing assault claims, later protective-order testimony, and the body-camera segments New Canaan still has not produced. The released material begins after officers had interviewed the parties and reached their charging decision. The initial accounts, investigative questioning, scene assessment, and full supervisory chain remain outside the public record presented here.
The video also shows police issuing Alvarez a disorderly-conduct summons. Luthmann and Weigel compare her visible condition and demeanor at that point with the injuries and accusations later advanced in court. Those observations do not decide the criminal cases, but they sharpen the demand for every remaining recording, photograph, report, dispatch record, and command-level communication.
The confrontation becomes a newsroom fight when Luthmann examines Michael Volpe’s report concluding that Weigel was properly served. Luthmann credits Volpe for obtaining the footage and defends his journalistic independence while identifying what the report gets right, what remains incomplete, and why the missing recordings still matter.
