Calcium and magnesium influence how the smooth muscles of your gastrointestinal tract contract and relax.
They play important but opposite roles in regulating gut motility.
1. Calcium: Promotes Muscle Contraction
**Mechanism:**Calcium ions enter smooth muscle cells through calcium channels, triggering muscle contraction in the gut wall.**Effect on Motility:**Higher calcium levels can
increase muscle toneand contractility, which mayslow down intestinal movement. With IBS, calcium might help diarrhea but worsen constipation.
2. Magnesium: Promotes Muscle Relaxation
Mechanism:Magnesium acts as a natural calcium channel blocker. Itcompetes with calcium, reducing muscle contraction and promoting relaxation.**Effect on Motility:**Adequate magnesium levels can help maintain
smooth, coordinated bowel movements. With IBS, magnesium might help constipation but worsen diarrhea.
In a nutshell:
Calcium→ muscle contraction → slows motilityMagnesium→ muscle relaxation & water retention in the gut → speeds motility
