Cartoon Creation: From Sketch to Completion
I really liked how this cartoon turned out, but it was a bit of a brain bender to get it to work visually. Sen.

I really liked how this cartoon turned out, but it was a bit of a brain bender to get it to work visually. Sen. Eric Schmitt’s comical self-immolation during the Jack Smith ~~inquisition~~ hearing was a topic ripe with satirical potential, and I wasn’t going to let that opportunity slip by, and I didn’t mind putting some extra effort into this cartoon.
The first sketch is just to convey the concept to freelance editors. Note that I mistakenly labeled him “Rep.” Eric Schmitt in the sketch. Unfortunately, neither I nor my editors at Raw Story caught the mistake.
I then moved on to a more refined sketch. At this point I needed a photo of Schmitt for the caricature. I didn’t actually draw this upside down. I flipped the image around on my iPad. I toyed at this point with having both arms inside the hoop with the left one wrapped around his head, but in the end, I erased that arm and stuck with the original plan.
Then, it was just a matter of “inking” over the sketch.
The dilemma of the image starts to reveal itself here. If I drew the net of basketball goal with just black lines, it would create a bit of a mess and it would be difficult to make out everything that’s going on in there. I moved the label to his rear end, because it just wouldn’t be legible if it was on his jersey, but it would still be overly busy inside the hoop.
