I first understood Claude Code properly when I stopped asking it for small pieces of code.
Before that, I was using it like a smarter autocomplete. Fix this function. Explain this error. Write this component. It was useful, but not life-changing.
Then I gave it a full folder, asked it to understand the project before touching anything, made it write a plan, forced it to review its own changes, and only then allowed it to build.
That was the shift.
Claude Code is not just a place where you ask coding questions. It is an agent that can sit inside your project, read files, make changes, run commands, test its own work, and help you move from idea to shipped product. The power is not only in the model. The real power is in the workflow you build around it.
This guide is the simple version I wish I had when I started.
No fancy theory. No developer ego. Just the setup, the habits, the prompts, and the commands that actually matter.
Claude Code is not a code suggestion tool. It is not autocomplete with extra steps.
It runs in your terminal, sees your whole project, can read and edit any file you let it touch, runs commands, runs tests, debugs failures, and works across a sequence of steps without you holding its hand at every turn. The mental model that works best is to think of it like a junior engineer that does not get tired, knows your stack the moment you tell it, and does not mind being corrected.
That mental shift is the whole game. The casual user opens it, types a one-shot prompt, gets a one-shot answer, closes it. The real user briefs it once, builds a small system around it, and lets it run. The output gap between those two people is huge, and almost none of it is about coding skill.
A lot of older tutorials still show the npm install method. That worked before, but the current Claude Code quickstart recommends the native installer. On Mac, Linux, or WSL, use this:
curl -fsSL https://claude.ai/install.sh | bash
On Windows PowerShell:
irm https://claude.ai/install.ps1 | iex
Then open your project folder and start Claude Code:
cd /path/to/your/project
claude
The first time you run it, Claude will ask you to log in. You can use a Claude subscription, Claude Console account, or supported cloud provider access. Claude Code is also available beyond the terminal now: desktop app, VS Code, JetBrains, web, Slack, and CI/CD workflows.
For beginners, I would start with terminal or VS Code. Terminal gives you the raw power. VS Code feels easier because you see the files and diffs inside your editor.
In the locked section, I go from basic setup to actual Claude Code workflow: CLAUDE.md, plan mode, reusable skills, Git safety, MCP servers, desktop sessions, debugging prompts, testing prompts, refactor prompts, production review, deployment checklist, and a full zero-to-shipping flow you can copy into your own project.
