This Fire Season Has Been A Challenge: Dozer Burned Over On The Wrights Spring Fire In Oregon, Claiming 47-Year-Old Jason Ensign's Life.
A 47-year-old man named Jason Ensign from Klamath Falls, Oregon, lost his life in a dozer burnover on the Wrights Spring Fire while building fireline with his D-6 dozer. The fire exploded in activity due to an encroaching weather event, cutting off Jason's escape route to the safety zone. This has been a challenging wildfire season so far, and the Klamath County Sheriff's Office is urging people to check in with those around them.
The Wrights Spring Fire has claimed over 10,000 acres, and the fire is moving toward private property. Northwest Team 8, a Complex Incident Management Team, took control of the fire on Friday, and additional resources such as task forces, hand crews, and engines have been ordered to the fire. The fire experienced growth on all sides, with several thousand acres gained on the east flank.

Malaria's Drug Resistance Is Becoming Alarmingly Sophisticated, Study Finds
The paper is a genetic survey of Plasmodium falciparum collected from 605 patients in 15 Ethiopian districts between 2019 and 2023, so it’s an observational, population‑level study rather than a clinical trial. The researchers sequenced known drug‑resistance genes and then looked at how often each marker showed up and whether markers tended to appear together.
They found chloroquine‑resistance genes in about 61 percent of the parasites, even though chloroquine hasn’t been used for falciparum for decades. Markers for sulfadoxine‑pyrimethamine were still present in roughly 43 percent, despite the drug being dropped in 2005. Artemisinin‑partial resistance showed up in 10 percent overall, but spiked to nearly 49 percent in one district. A lumefantrine‑reduced‑sensitivity pattern was seen in 93 percent of the samples.
The most worrisome bit is that these markers often co‑occur. Parasites carrying chloroquine resistance were three times more likely to also carry artemisinin‑partial resistance, suggesting a “double‑whammy” of resistance that could undermine the current artemether‑lumefantrine regimen.
The authors conclude that Ethiopia’s malaria parasite landscape is a patchwork of different resistance profiles, so a one‑size‑fits‑all control strategy won’t work. They recommend region‑specific surveillance that tracks both falciparum and vivax using whole‑genome sequencing and links genetic data to treatment outcomes.

Wild Boars in Brazil Are Spreading Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria, Scientists Warn
Researchers took rectal swabs from 100 apparently healthy European wild boars raised on two commercial farms in Goiás, Brazil, and screened them for Salmonella and E. coli. It’s a straightforward observational study—not a trial—so the numbers reflect what they found at that moment, not a cause‑and‑effect claim.
Salmonella showed up once and wasn’t especially worrisome, but E. coli was far more common: 56 boars carried it, and 55 of those isolates (about 98 %) were resistant to multiple antibiotics. The resistance clustered around cheap, first‑line drugs like sulfonamides, tetracycline, amoxicillin, ampicillin and doxycycline, while almost all remained sensitive to ceftriaxone, a drug we reserve for serious human infections.
Around a third of the resistant E. coli strains also harbored genes (tsh, papC, iss) that can make bacteria stick to tissues and survive in the bloodstream, which could raise their disease‑causing potential if they jump to people or livestock.
The researchers think the resistance isn’t coming from the boars themselves—farm managers said antibiotics aren’t routinely used—but from the surrounding environment, where resistance genes linger in soil and water and can be passed between microbes. The study is limited to two farms and samples collected several years ago, so the picture might have shifted, but it does flag wild boars as a possible reservoir that deserves surveillance as they expand across Brazil.
