Only 35 percent of Republicans said they “strongly approve” of Trump’s performance in a Reuters/Ipsos poll released on Tuesday. Meanwhile, the president’s approval rating continues to sink as his war with Iran keeps gas prices soaring.

In today’s newsletter: A collapsing trade deal has united Canadians more than ever, in an existential confrontation with the US president Good morning. When the Guardian asked Canadian readers whether they planned to boycott US products after dramatic escalations in the ongoing DC/Ottawa trade war, we received more than 2,000 responses within 12 hours. This inundation is perhaps evidence of the existential crisis many Canadians feel they now face, something often lost in the granular reporting of trade negotiations: this is about so much more than the price of lumber.

Is Sikorski’s “European Legion” Proposal a Way for Poland to Deploy “Peacekeepers” to Ukraine?
Yves here. Remember that Radek Sikorski is ferociously anti-Russia, so trying to find a too-obvious way to get Polish boots in the ground in Ukraine is in character: Hey Radosław Sikorski, is this you praising the US for sabotaging NordStream? https://t.co/wIjSXQ4CWz pic.twitter.com/HYMcdXzVTL — Richard (@ricwe123) May 9, 2024 More background to help calibrate: You’d be wrong to think of Sikorski as a Polish nationalist with historical grievances. He is Anne Applebaum’s husband. He is a cosmopolitan westoid.
