Too much 'bad' cholesterol in the bloodstream – that's the low-density lipoprotein (LDL) type – can contribute to plaque buildup in the arteries, increasing the risk of cardiovascular problems like heart attacks and strokes. Many factors affect LDL cholesterol levels, including genetics, diet, and age, while treatments for high cholesterol can involve dietary changes and statins. Scientists are now working on a precise DNA-editing approach, using CRISPR technology to make a permanent genetic change that could durably reduce LDL cholesterol after a single treatment.
Genetic road map offers hope for threatened Visayan spotted deer
Scientists have sequenced the first-ever draft genome of the Philippines’ highly threatened Visayan spotted deer. The genome could guide efforts to save it from extinction, reports contributor Pippo Carmona for Mongabay. The Visayan spotted deer (Rusa alfredi) was once found across six islands in the central Philippines. But deforestation and hunting decimated its population, prompting the IUCN, the global wildlife conservation authority, to list it as endangered in 1988. By 2019, Philippine authorities had classified the species as nationally critically endangered.

When we picture glaciers, it's easy to imagine vast expanses of white ice gleaming under the sky. But not all glaciers take that form. The world is covered in a different kind, called rock glaciers – landforms in mountain regions where masses of ice and rock coexist, hidden under a hard surface of rock and boulders. As a new study published in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Earth Surface reveals, rock glaciers can hold a truly stunning amount of ice. There are more than 51,000 documented rock glaciers globally – over 10,000 of which are located in the US.
