The sameness problem behind those unappetizing AI-generated menus
When it first happens to you, you think you’re crazy. You wander into a cafe and look at a menu with a variety of bagel sandwiches, but each illustration looks eerily flawless, precisely symmetrical, and oddly smooth, eliciting a visceral sensation that something isn’t right. You might think you’re paranoid, but you’re not losing your mind. Generative AI menus have hit the restaurant business courtesy of models courtesy of models trained on a narrow, “pleasing” aesthetic that produces a look that feels wrong even when you can’t articulate why.
I’m back. And yes, I do feel actually quite awful about leaving Substack in the lurch. Life got in the way. So did that nagging voice that always seems to ask, “Who do you think you are?” It’s funny (and not in a good way) how, even at 39, those old teenage insecurities sneak back in. But I’ve realized something important: I didn’t start writing here to impress anyone. I started because I wanted a place to pour out ideas, observations, and little sparks of inspiration from daily life.
Welcome to another AI by Aakash. I follow the AI news so you don’t have to. Omarchy is the hottest AI tool on X right now. After installing it this week, I finally get the hype. We're so used to desktop Linux feeling like rot that this felt like getting into a Ferrari. That’s today’s deep dive. First, a word from our sponsor + this week’s top news (including GPT-6). Growth teams check their funnels when something breaks. A Custom Agent monitors them for you 24/7. You configure it to a task like checkout drop-off and connect your stack.
OpenAI commits $1B in AI credits to frontline cyber defenders
OpenAI has pledged $1 billion in credits to subsidize access to its services and training for resource-strapped cyber defenders around the world. The AI giant expects organizations to use the subsidized credits over the next six months as part of its Daybreak for Frontline Defenders initiative, announced Thursday. Critical infrastructure organizations, community banks, nonprofits, and open-source maintainers can apply for access credits online.
From keywords to intent, how AI is rewriting advertising
In a price-sensitive market, scale does not automatically translate into revenue. India, ChatGPT’s second-largest market after the US, is a case in point. It has more than 100 million weekly users, most on the free or low-priced Go tier. Serving those users at scale consumes increasingly costly inference compute. That helps explain OpenAI’s move into advertising. Ads are not just a new revenue stream; they are a reminder that there are few free lunches in the artificial intelligence (AI) economy.
ThursdAI - Sep 3, 2026 - Fable 5.1 & Mythos 5.1, Muse Spark 1.3 catches Fable 5, an uncensored GLM-5.3 & World Labs Atlas (part 1 of 2)
Hey everyone, Alex here 👋 Summer is over. Wolfram said it in the first minute of the show and he was right. In 48 hours Anthropic shipped Fable 5.1, Meta’s Muse Spark 1.3 caught up to Fable 5 on the Artificial Analysis index at a fifth of the price, Google shipped another Flash, 3.8 this time, Z.ai put the full GLM-5.3 weights out, and three labs shipped world models that run in real time. It seems that they all tried to send their best work before Astra drops. This week’s ThursdAI was so long that I decided to split it into two episodes. This is the regular format you know and love.
Small Business Topics I Am Exploring to Help My Startup Clients Build Rocksolid Foundations for Withstanding an Uncertain Future
Most 'hot take' business coaching promoted online starts in the wrong place. Or skips the fundamentals of what it takes to build a rock solid business that can withstand the ups and downs of entrepreneurship, and the economy. I'm working to create education and content to fill in the blanks, and also to address a huge elephant in the lounge room: Business has changed and lots of old business wisdom frankly does not apply anymore. 2.
Why 80% of New Businesses Fail to Nail Their Brand (and How to Be in the Winning 20%)
Are you stuck in the conundrum as you’re starting a new business about how much time and energy to invest in your brand at launch? Or the fine line of realizing your obsession with your new brand is just taking too long and holding up the show. (Spoiler: Usually because you’re not clear on your audience or idea.) The truth is most new businesses have a lot of moving parts and doing the brand visuals often becomes just a line item, most people rush it and never go back to fix it.
How DeepSeek Shattered AI Giants and 5 Lessons It has for Founders
This week, a 200-person startup from China called DeepSeek disrupted the tech world, wiping out $700 billion in market value from tech giants NVIDIA. DeepSeek built an AI system that matches GPT-4’s performance—at 20x less cost. But here’s the bigger story: Deepseek’s story can be seen as a billion-dollar company disruption and industry dominance. However what I see is the deeper narrative, showing the world what’s possible for anyone—including startups and small businesses. DeepSeek’s release proves that the playing field is wide open.
Welcome back, monitors. "Per aspera ad astra" is a Latin phrase that means “Through hardship to the stars.” OpenAI goes to the stars with its release of GPT-6 Astra, NVIDIA agrees to acquire Hugging Face, and Anthropic’s relationship with the Trump Administration is in flux again. OpenAI launched GPT-6 Astra, its new frontier model, with major improvements in computer use, coding, cybersecurity, science, and professional work. Astra scored 99.9% on ARC-AGI-3 and ~98% on FrontierMath Tier 4 and has saturated many other benchmarks.
