Despite having no training, or even a pair of running shoes, Ramabai Ranveer sprinted barefoot to victory in her first-ever race in August. The 47-year-old widow had entered a 3km (1.86-mile) community run with a single goal: winning the prize money to help pay for her two daughters' education. When she crossed the finish line first, Ramabai from Maharashtra in western India was delighted. The 3,000-rupee ($31; £23) prize would help her buy books and study materials for her daughters. It was not much money.
He Left Her for a Cult, but It Would Be Years Before She Knew It
Hoyt Richards, a male supermodel, disappeared from Donna Flagg’s life for several years. The reason was the subject of a recent HBO Max docuseries. When Hoyt Richards vanished from Donna Flagg’s life in 1998, she saw his face everywhere. “I’d be walking around New York not knowing what happened to my boyfriend,” she said, and then he would appear. Flagg knew it was normal for the mind to instinctively scan crowds and surroundings for a loved one who was missing. But this was different. Because Richards was an international supermodel, his likeness was hard to avoid.
The Thomas and Kavanaugh Hearings Restaged as a Theatre of Fact
In the hands of the creators Lee Sunday Evans and Elizabeth Marvel, history is mortar: moldable until it dries, in the way of all plaster-like substances. For their play, “The Ford/Hill Project,” the two have spliced, cut, and edited the testimonies produced in two infamous Supreme Court confirmation hearings—those of the conservative Justices Clarence Thomas and Brett Kavanaugh, held twenty-seven years apart—and the result, somewhat amazingly, is the feeling of vertigo. These are, after all, events we more than know.
