Hidden gut defect that may explain why IBD keeps coming back
Researchers have uncovered a hidden molecular warning sign of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that can linger even when patients feel well and appear to be in remission. By studying around 900 human gut biopsies and patient-derived mini-intestines, the team found that intestinal cells can remain unusually primed to die, creating a “smoldering” defect that may help drive future flare-ups.
Scientists solve a 50-year mystery and discover a new human blood group
Scientists have identified the genetic cause behind the mysterious AnWj blood group antigen, solving a puzzle that began in 1972 and establishing a new blood group system called MAL. The discovery could make it much easier to find extremely rare AnWj-negative patients and donors and protect them from potentially dangerous transfusion reactions.
A deadly ebola relative is surging after years in the shadows
A growing Bundibugyo virus outbreak is showing how a little-known relative of Ebola can become a major threat when diagnosis and treatment options are limited. Experts warn that preparing only for familiar pathogens could leave the world vulnerable when rare but deadly viruses suddenly reemerge.
If Your Family Won’t Get On Board With Eating Better, Stop Asking Them To
Researchers followed three couples‑based trials. In the first, 357 partners of people in an intensive diabetes‑focused lifestyle program lost about five pounds over a year, versus less than a pound for spouses of a lighter‑education group. A second trial showed a modest five‑pound loss for spouses when the enrolled partner got a structured commercial program, compared with four pounds from a simple handout. The third trial—231 couples—found that having the partner attend weight‑loss sessions didn’t help the primary participant (they lost half a pound less), but the attending partners themselves shed roughly five and a half pounds.
The pattern is clear: a partner’s own exposure to the program drives their weight change, not the person they’re supporting. Simply being around someone who’s changing doesn’t automatically shift your habits.
For dinner, try cooking one base dish everyone accepts, then add your own tweak at the very end—like a handful of spinach on top of the chili. It takes seconds, not an extra hour, and lets you meet your goals without sparking conflict.
Hey! So, I was reading about plums, specifically damsons, and it turns out this year's crop was pretty disappointing. Apparently, it's a bit of a cyclical thing with damsons, so next year, 2027, is supposed to be a much better year for them. The hot, dry summer probably didn't help either.
But don't despair! Even though the damson season was a bust for the author, she's still got some great plum recipes to share before they're all gone. She's even got a whole section in her book, "SIFT," dedicated to plums because she wrote it during a really good plum year.
She's highlighting a bunch of recipes, like a plum and buttermilk steamed sponge that sounds super light and tangy, and a plum crumble pie that's apparently a real showstopper. There's also a rich, tender cake with plums baked right in, and a Polish mountain cake, Karpatka, with stewed plums for a nice contrast.
And if those aren't enough, there's a frangipane tart with thinly sliced plums, plum jam (though you can use any jam if damsons are scarce!), and even some short, buttery cookies with plum jam. She also mentions a recipe that uses herb oils in cakes with roasted plums as a topping, and a really interesting linzer dough recipe with plum and walnut. Basically, if you can get your hands on some plums, there are tons of ways to enjoy them!
