Owner, businessman & player: Messi has big plans as a golden era ends
Lionel Messi is set to play his final match for Argentina, marking an emotional farewell in a friendly against Benin. This will be his 208th appearance, and he’s stepping away after announcing his retirement from the national team following the World Cup final loss to Spain. Coach Lionel Scaloni has left the door open for a potential return, but it seems Messi is ready to close that chapter.
His club career continues with Inter Miami, where his contract runs until 2028. Messi is likely to renew it if he feels up to it. While he hasn’t planned far ahead, he’s already making moves in football ownership. He recently acquired UE Cornella and CD Eldense, aiming to shape their futures while staying involved from a distance. He’s closely following Eldense’s matches and has already attracted new sponsors eager to partner with him.
Messi’s interests extend beyond football. He’s invested in a range of businesses, including hotels and a restaurant chain. His childhood club, Newell's Old Boys, remains significant to him, especially with the Messi Cup for youth academies. As he transitions into this new phase, Messi is committed to staying connected to the game he loves while building a diverse business portfolio.
Wales resume their bid to reach a first Women's World Cup this week knowing former boss Gemma Grainger may eventually stand between them and a place in Brazil next summer. Grainger came closer than any of her predecessors to ending Wales' wait for a World Cup appearance in qualifying for the 2023 tournament. Yet as they head into the play-offs for the 2027 World Cup, Wales' players are aware that something special is likely to be required against Grainger's Norway side if they are to achieve their dream this time around.
Northern Ireland's first nine points in the Uefa Nations League were accumulated over the grand total of 17 games. Finishing their four-game window with a stalemate against Georgia on Monday night ensured Michael O'Neill's side earned eight across a mere 11 days. It says plenty about the growing mood around this young side that, even after what was undoubtedly their best ever Nations League window, fans filed out of Windsor Park frustrated that it was not more.

Monday Night Football: Falcons run over Saints 45-24 to ruin New Orleans' celebration
The Falcons dominated the Saints on Monday night, winning 45-24 and spoiling New Orleans' "Domecoming" celebration. Atlanta's ground game was unstoppable, racking up 205 rushing yards. Bijan Robinson led the charge with 145 yards and two touchdowns, including a 59-yard sprint on the third play of the game. The Falcons jumped out to a quick 14-0 lead and never looked back, going into halftime up 24-7.
Quarterback Michael Penix had a solid night, completing 15 of 20 passes for 223 yards and a touchdown. Drake London and Jahan Dotson were key targets, combining for over 150 receiving yards. For the Saints, Alvin Kamara made history by tying the franchise record for most multiple-rushing touchdown games, scoring twice. Tyler Shough threw for 286 yards and a touchdown, but the Saints struggled to keep pace.
In the end, the Falcons improved to 2-2, now tied for the NFC South lead, while the Saints fell to 1-3. The only downside for Atlanta was injuries to edge rusher Za'Darius Smith and left tackle Jake Matthews, both of whom left the game early. They'll need to recover quickly as they prepare for the Ravens this Sunday.
LT Jake Matthews ruled out as Falcons take 31-7 lead
Falcons left tackle Jake Matthews will not return tonight. The Falcons have ruled him out. Now, the question becomes: Will his groin injury keep him out of Sunday night's game against the Ravens on a short week? Matthews has started 199 games in a row, the longest active streak in the NFL. He made his 200th career start on Monday night but left in the first quarter. The Falcons are rolling in the third quarter, holding a 31-10 lead after Brian Robinson's second rushing touchdown. The Falcons have 173 rushing yards, with Bijan Robinson running for 132 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries.
