Meta bans TikTok ads on its platforms in US, Japan and other countries
Meta's ban takes effect immediately in the US, Canada, Egypt, Indonesia, Japan, Thailand and Vietnam. The move marks an escalation in the long-running rivalry between Meta and ByteDance, whose video-sharing app TikTok has emerged as one of Meta's most formidable competitors for user engagement, creators and advertising dollars. Meta's ban takes effect immediately in the US, Canada, Egypt, Indonesia, Japan, Thailand and Vietnam, and extends to third-party advertisers running campaigns that link to TikTok and other ByteDance properties in those countries, Meta said.
Meta stated that it’s standard business practice to decline ads from competitors, emphasizing its commitment to enhancing product quality and user experience. Meanwhile, TikTok has not publicly responded to this development.
In another context, Meta has been pushing TikTok and YouTube to adopt similar teen safety measures that it agreed to implement after settling a lawsuit over social media's impact on children. TikTok recently settled with Alabama to enhance its safety protocols, including usage limits for minors.
