ZachXBT identifies French bank as alleged victim of $133M crypto theft
$133 million — that’s the figure floating around after ZachXBT pointed to French bank Crédit Mutuel Arkéa as a potential victim of a significant crypto theft. The bank, which has assets totaling about $235 billion, hasn’t confirmed its involvement yet, but ZachXBT suggests the losses could actually be higher when factoring in over-the-counter transactions that weren’t included in the initial estimates.
This all started with a report on suspicious withdrawals from centralized exchanges, which began at over $106 million and quickly climbed to the current figure after further investigation revealed an additional $27 million in withdrawals. It’s interesting to note that around $63 million in stablecoins was converted to Ether (ETH) within just a few hours.
Both Kraken and Crypto.com have responded by restricting accounts and blocking funds linked to the suspected theft, assuring that their platforms remain secure. It’s a reminder of how quickly things can escalate in this space.

Chainalysis Describes Recovery Efforts After Mercado Bitcoin Security Incident
TL;DR: Chainalysis said on November 2 that it had supported tracing and containment efforts following a security incident involving Mercado Bitcoin. Incident estimates can differ between early reports, technical responders and the affected platform. The difference between “identified”, “frozen” and “returned” is easy to lose in fast-moving security coverage. It matters to victims because only the last of those creates a completed recovery. Clear language also protects the credibility of investigators by avoiding a bigger success claim than the evidence supports.
Mercado Bitcoin just confirmed that users won’t lose any funds after a security breach involving about $38 million. They’ve suspended deposits and withdrawals as a precautionary measure and have already blocked $11 million in collaboration with Tether and other firms. The breach was identified early Monday, and while they’re still assessing the situation, they’re confident in their containment efforts.
Interestingly, blockchain security firm Hypernative reported that over $40 million moved from wallets associated with Mercado Bitcoin. The suspicious transactions were recorded as if they were authorized, raising questions about how the attacker gained access.
This incident comes on the heels of the $6.3 billion Binance hack, so the industry is certainly feeling the pressure. Meanwhile, ZachXBT flagged another potential theft involving over $133 million linked to a European entity, with funds being laundered through various exchanges and converted into privacy coins. It seems like the landscape is getting more complex, and transparency is still a major concern.

Payments Could Give Crypto Super Apps a Daily Use Case, TOKEN2049 Experts Say
At TOKEN2049 in Singapore, the spotlight was on how payments could drive daily crypto usage. Executives from major players like MetaMask and Trezor discussed the challenge of making crypto apps appealing for everyday use. While trading is sporadic, payments offer a consistent reason for users to engage with these platforms.
Rubic's co-founder highlighted that users need safe, secure, and cost-effective transaction options. However, there’s a debate on whether all-in-one super apps are the best solution. Some experts argue that specialized services could provide better execution and privacy.
The discussions also touched on simplifying crypto transactions for everyday users. The complexity of managing gas fees and navigating multiple steps can be a barrier. ChangeNOW's Yana emphasized that users shouldn’t have to deal with these intricacies, and there’s potential for AI to streamline the process.
Concerns about privacy were raised, particularly regarding sensitive payments that shouldn’t be publicly visible. As the industry evolves, the focus will be on delivering the convenience and reliability that users expect from traditional financial services.

Binance's Teng Says Industry Must Learn From Hack: Do New Crypto Features Raise Risk?
Binance co-CEO Richard Teng says the industry must learn from the $6.3 billion Binance hack. Hackers combined a new Ethereum (ETH) feature, fake recruiters and AI techniques, raising questions about new crypto tools. Yet one Ethereum researcher says the feature itself is not broken. ETH holders on exchanges could be exposed through custodians’ signing systems rather than the upgrade. What Does Teng Say the Industry Should Learn From the Binance Hack? Teng told CNBC on Tuesday that Binance published a detailed report so the industry can learn from it.
