Billionaire Vivek Ramaswamy’s millions and Greg Abbott’s $106 million war chest couldn’t stop Democrats from flipping Texas and Ohio
In a surprising turn, Texas Governor Greg Abbott conceded to Democrat Gina Hinojosa, who led with 57% of the vote despite Abbott’s staggering $105.7 million war chest. This marks a significant shift, as Hinojosa becomes the first Latina governor of Texas and the first Democrat to hold the position since 1990. Meanwhile, in Ohio, Democrat Amy Acton triumphed over billionaire Vivek Ramaswamy, who poured tens of millions into his campaign. Acton’s victory is historic as she becomes the first woman and the first Democrat to win the governorship in two decades.
In Iowa, Democrat Rob Sand also made headlines by winning the governorship, the first for his party since 2006. Sand’s campaign focused on affordability and healthcare access, appealing to disenchanted Republicans and independents. Lastly, in Georgia, Keisha Lance Bottoms made history as the first Black woman elected governor in the U.S., defeating Republican Rick Jackson. Her campaign, like others, centered on economic issues and affordability.

Stock futures plunge as blue tsunami hits red states and data center hot spots. Wall Street usually likes political gridlock—but maybe not this time
A surprisingly strong performance for Democrats so far on election night sent stock futures down sharply as Wall Street faces the prospect of intense partisanship for the next two years. While most races still haven’t been called, Democrats won the Senate seat in deep-red South Carolina and are maintaining healthy margins in the Republican strongholds of Texas and Kansas. Democratic gubernatorial candidates are also leading in Texas and Ohio, which have been major hot spots for data centers.

The Stock Market May Love The Election Results No Matter Who Wins
I’m keeping this short tonight because it feels like 1 AM, even though it’s only 6:30 PM. It’s been dark in New York since before 5, and I’m already ready for bed. I really don’t like the switch from daylight saving time back to standard time. Anyway, the VIX 1-day finished near 23, suggesting the market is pricing in significant volatility around tonight’s election. That means there’s a good chance the S&P 500 rallies tomorrow, perhaps by 1% or so, regardless of which side wins, as that event-related uncertainty disappears.
