Meta, Google and TikTok Sue to Block California Law Protecting Minors on Social Media
They argue that the law infringes on their First Amendment rights and violates Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, which gives platforms the freedom to manage how content is presented to users. This law, known as Assembly Bill 1709, prohibits features like personalized feeds and autoplay for users under 16, requiring companies to delete accounts and personal information for those users.
The tech giants filed their lawsuits in various federal courts across California, claiming that without personalized content, younger users would miss out on relevant videos tailored to their interests. Google specifically mentioned that without such features, valuable content could get lost among videos meant for different age groups. TikTok echoed these concerns, labeling the law as an unconstitutional restriction on free expression.
These legal actions come amid a backdrop of increasing scrutiny over social media's impact on youth. Just a couple of months ago, Meta settled a significant lawsuit related to teen social media addiction for $18 billion, while TikTok reached a $100 million settlement with Alabama over similar issues. California's Attorney General, Rob Bonta, is named as the defendant in these lawsuits and has expressed commitment to defending the state's efforts to safeguard children online.
Earlier this year, a judge denied a request from these companies to halt the enforcement of the law, indicating that the legal battle is just beginning. The outcome could have significant implications for how social media platforms operate when it comes to younger users.
Married At First Sight UK cancelled after rape allegations
The British version of Married At First Sight has been cancelled after a review that was launched because of sexual assault allegations. Channel 4 removed all previous seasons of the show in May. The broadcaster of the British version of Married At First Sight says the program will not return to screens following a review prompted after three contestants alleged they had been sexually assaulted during the making of the reality TV show.
