A ProPublica investigation reported earlier this week that Umar Kremlev, a Russian oligarch with close ties to Vladimir Putin, paid hundreds of thousands of dollars toward celebrations surrounding Donald Trump Jr.’s May wedding to Bettina Anderson in the Bahamas. Records reviewed by ProPublica and interviews with three people familiar with the event indicate Kremlev paid to rent one of two private islands used for the three-day festivities and covered other major expenses, including a fireworks display.
Kremlev is president of the International Boxing Association, which has received financing from Russia’s state-owned energy giant Gazprom. Shortly before the wedding, Kremlev traveled in China as part of a delegation accompanying Putin; a month earlier, Putin awarded him Russia’s Order of Friendship. Ukraine has sanctioned Kremlev, citing his connections to Putin and Russian security services. ProPublica also reports that payments for the wedding festivities came through a Dubai entity affiliated with the boxing organization.
Trump Jr. and his wife have not disputed that Kremlev paid for the festivities, but they reject the suggestion that anything improper occurred. They describe Kremlev as a personal friend and say his spending was an extraordinarily generous wedding gift. Bettina Trump has emphasized that their actual wedding was a private family ceremony and that Kremlev hosted two nights of celebrations afterward. A Trump Jr. spokesperson said the two men have no business relationship and met through a mutual friend, bonding over hunting, boxing and the outdoors. President Trump said he does not know Kremlev and called the controversy “not a big deal.”
The relationship had not previously been publicly reported, and ProPublica says the two men appear to have met relatively recently. Former U.S. counterintelligence officials interviewed by the outlet raised concerns about a Putin-connected oligarch providing substantial financial benefits to the sitting president’s son, while noting there is no evidence presented that Kremlev was acting at Putin’s direction or that Trump Jr. promised anything in return.
The revelations have now prompted congressional scrutiny. Rep. Robert Garcia, the ranking Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, has requested financial records and other information from Trump Jr., saying the arrangement raises national-security and public-corruption questions. Trump Jr. and his wife maintain that the explanation is much simpler: a wealthy friend gave them an unusually extravagant wedding gift.
So, no biggie, right?
