Someone dies. The room fills with the sound of people falling apart in the way grief is supposed to sound. You stand there registering the loss as fact, as weight, as something true and permanent, and you wait for the flood everyone else seems to already be standing in.
It doesn’t come.
So you do the thing you’ve learned to do without quite remembering when you learned it. You check your face. You match the room’s temperature. You’ve done this enough times that it isn’t even effortful anymore, which, if you let yourself notice it, is its own horror. Three days later, alone, doing something unrelated, it arrives all at once and undoes you completely, at a time when it can do no one any good and no one is there to see it.
Or maybe it never arrives at all, and that absence becomes a private fact you carry around like something contraband.
There’s a sentence that should be one of the more reassuring things a person can say, and instead it tends to land like a confession.

I want to propose something more accurate, and I think more useful. That sentence describes a structural feature of a mind. It is not automatically a verdict on that mind’s morality. The relationship between knowing and feeling, between feeling and showing, between now and later, is not fixed or universal. It varies by person, by nervous system, by history. Most of what gets labeled coldness, flatness, or not caring enough is something more precise and far less sinister: emotional asynchrony.
The Concept of Emotional Asynchrony
