Getting a few minutes of genuine laughter before bed can do more than lift your mood, it can directly help your gut.
When you laugh, your body releases endorphins (natural painkillers) and reduces stress hormones like cortisol. This directly impacts the gut-brain axis, helping calm intestinal spasms and lower pain sensitivity.
Laughter is like a reset button for your gut.
Laughing also helps shift your body out of “fight or flight” into “rest-and-digest” mode. This is essential for healthy digestion and reducing urgency and diarrhea.
The gentle muscle stimulation from deep belly laughter can actually help improve motility and aid constipation.
And since stress is one of the biggest IBS triggers, anything that genuinely relaxes you is powerful medicine.
So try reading, watching, or listening to something funny before sleep. Even 5 minutes helps.
With IBS, it can really feel like if I’m not laughing I’m crying. So it’s nice to know that some laughter before bed tonight can literally help lead to a happier gut and better tomorrow.
