Let’s open the mail. (Soundtrack for today’s Mailbag: The new album from Brennan Wedl.)
Q: What are your thoughts on the recent whistleblower exposing the US Postal Service attempt to build a system to screen absentee ballots? Will the exposure stop the USPS from moving forward with Trumps plan to limit mail in voting?
A: On Thursday, the Trump administration asked the Supreme Court to lift the block on the U.S. Postal Service rule that would likely restrict mail-in balloting. The Court, which last month postponed a ruling, seems likely to make one this time.
I am of mixed mind on this.
If the Court allows Trump’s Postal Service rule on mail-in balloting — which would essentially set up a national voter registration list — to go into effect, it would absolutely change mail-in balloting in the midterms. And that would very likely hurt Democrats and help Republicans.
But, I simply don’t see how, logistically, this can be implemented with less than nine weeks to go before the election. North Carolina is sending out mail-in ballots today. Plenty of other states will follow suit soon. I simply do not see how this can work — even if the Court decides in Trump’s favor over the next week.
There’s no question this is the big x-factor left in the 2026 race — and the only one I can see that could really help Republicans.

Q: Hey Chris, while I agree that impeaching Trump would be foolish and counterproductive on the part of Democrats if (when) they take the House, what about other members of the Cabinet who are clearly causing just as much damage, if not more? Particularly Pete Hegseth. Knowing that midterms will be in the rear view, do you think there are enough regretful R’s to convict and remove, or do you think Trump will still be able to scare them into compliance?
