Q: I know you think impeaching Trump is a stupid idea, but he has broken so many laws, is that a wise approach?
A: I think it is a politically stupid idea, yes. (If you missed my piece on it, read it here.)
Your question presumes that impeachment is a legal process (“he has broken so many laws”). But, impeachment isn’t a legal process. It’s inherently a political one.
Yes, if a president is found guilty in a Senate trial, he can be removed from office. But he would face no legal repercussions as a result of that removal.
Given the inherent political nature of impeachment, I think you HAVE to think of it in purely political terms. And the politics of impeaching Trump — again — with zero chance of him actually being removed from office by the Senate are simply terrible for Democrats.
Q: If Dems take control of the House, how wide of a pardon is Trump going to get away with? Will he pardon all known associates? How will he word it to blunt the effect of House investigations?
