Do garlic and onions upset your IBS? You’re not alone!
Try replacing them with **asofoetida **(also called hing). This is a powerhouse spice that’s all flavor, no IBS triggers.
But wait, asofo-what?!
Asafoetida has been a staple of Indian cooking for centuries, prized for its rich flavor and digestive support.
It’s the resin from the root of a plant in the parsley family. It’s dried, ground into a fine powder, and used as a seasoning.
It’s naturally rich in volatile oils (disulfides, trisulfides, and other organosulfur compounds) that create a bold savory aroma which mellows beautifully when cooked.
Those volatile oils are bioactive and can help relax smooth muscle in the gut — somewhat similar to peppermint oil’s impressive antispasmodic action, though the chemistry is different.
It’s these sulfur-based volatile oils that give asafoetida its pungent sulfuric onion-garlic-leek–like depth of aroma and flavor - but without the digestive distress those high-FODMAP alliums can cause for some people with IBS.
Asofoetida is also high in ferulic acid and GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid), which can help with gut comfort and motility.
Asafoetida usually comes as a cream-to-golden yellow powder. You’ll find it in the spice section at health food stores, Indian markets, or online. **A little goes a long way. ** Use too much and it can overwhelm the dish. Get a small glass bottle, as you’ll use this sparingly.
**Cooking with asafoetida is one of my stealthiest IBS kitchen tricks. **
Here are my favorite ways to use it:
**Bloom in 1 T of oil first.**Sauté a pinch of ground asofoetida in hot oil for 10–15 seconds before adding other ingredients. This releases its mellow, savory, sulfuric depths.**Pair with other gut-friendly spices & herbs.**It works beautifully with cumin, turmeric, coriander, mustard seed, ginger, fennel, oregano - and virtually all of those are also digestive aids.**In soups & stews.**Adds depth without overpowering.**In lentil & bean dishes.**Gives a rich flavor and helps reduce gas-producing effects.**In sauces & curries.**Perfect for tomato-based anything.**Everything else!**In salad dressings, dips, marinades, even pasta sauces.
Bonus tip:
Pair your meal with a strong cup of ** high volatile oil peppermint tea** for extra tummy care.
