Abdul El-Sayed is a progressive Democrat running to represent his home state of Michigan in the United States Senate. He doesn’t take corporate PAC money, calls out Israel’s genocide, wants to abolish ICE, and wrote a book on Medicare for All.
Despite being outspent by 10 to 1, El-Sayed won his primary and is on the verge of becoming the first Muslim elected to the Senate. Yes, El-Sayed is a brown-skinned Muslim man just like New York’s Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
As such, El-Sayed has become a convenient target for Donald Trump and MAGA, whose disastrous leadership has further sunk the economy, raised inflation, unleashed a failed war in Iran, and made life unaffordable for many Americans. Instead of offering solutions, they have hate and Islamophobia. Democratic donors and some elected officials have decided to help in the spirit of bipartisanship.
El-Sayed now must play “The Condemnathon” game, which was instituted after the 9-11 terror attacks and requires every Muslim to condemn every violent act done by violent Muslims even in countries they’ve never visited.
Except El-Sayed and the new generation are done playing dumb games and winning a punch in the face. Instead, he turned the question on its head, went viral, and exposed a right-wing, Christian nationalist plant. He’s also made pro-Israel hawks and some major Democratic donors lose their collective minds.
